Re: 1981 Mini City 1000

Some people think more oil pressure the better but as you say it can do a lot of damage . The real test is when the engine is good and hot . If you have driven a Sportspack with the oil temperature gauge you can see how much longer it takes to heat up the oil than the coolant.

The rusting of the window surrounds only became a problem in the nineties with the new wider rubber seal. Never noticed a rivet there before.

Re: Engine Braking

Excessive play in the diff can make the transition from accelerating to braking very harsh. Jack up one front wheel and with the car in gear rotate the wheel back and forth to see how much play there is.

Re: mini cooper s 2000 overheating

As the car has been sitting up the first thing to check is that the stat is opening. MPi engines run a normal temperature around 100 deg. C so it is important that the cooling system holds pressure as water boils at a higher temperature under pressure. Is there any steam coming out. MPi expansion bo...

Re: Mini unknown reg

I think 10" wheels makes your car pre 1987. Many items on the car will have date stamps like the dizzy or wiper motor . four digits ( 25 85) ,week 25 year '85. You can also put the engine number into Guessworks engine ID page to get more details http://www.guessworks.co.uk/Tech/engine.htm With the c...

I have never seen a car that needed new cantrails let alone two, I would be interested to see photos of the damage ones.

If you put up some photos of the car people may know it and give you some history of it.

Looks nice. Does the bonnet scoop go all the way across ? Is that a rad or intercooler on the front?

Re: Mini 30

Is the car in your name?
Would you not be better selling the car with log book?
How would the buyer verify that you were the owner and the VIN and engine numbers?
Any pictures of the restoration?

Re: Problems Starting mk3

The clutch shaft does not move a lot during normal operation and its movement is limited by the throw out stop and the return stop. Removing the clutch lever arm removed the return stop.

Glad to help. The starting the car in gear is only for when the arm is moving but the plate is stuck to the flywheel. Get the arm moving freely first.

Re: Problems Starting mk3

You'll probably find that easy start is giving you the cough but petrol is too old to keep it running. Unleaded petrol loses a lot of its octane rating after a year lying in the tank. To check if the clutch slave cylinder is seized remove the dust cover and push back the piston with a narrow screwdr...

Re: Problems Starting mk3

If you got a cough your nearly there( or its got the virus ) . put fresh petrol in the carb float chamber and make sure theres oil in the dashpot. Then you say the clutch is locked do you mean the arm won't move at all?

Re: Problems Starting mk3

If the solinoid is knackered you can short the terminals with a big spanner (expect a big spark) and the motor should turn.

Re: Problems Starting mk3

Did the altenator spark when you turned the key to the ignition position or the start (spring) porition.
Did you get any dashboard lights with the ignition on?
Did the motor crank over in the start position?
