Insurance question

Hi,
I might get more active on this forum as I am intending of buying a 1969 Cooper from to UK.
The idea is to use it only for occasional weekend drives and to finally join up with the IOMC.
My problem is, that I've never owned a car in Ireland (therefore, I have no existing car insurance).
The problem is, that I can't get the Mini insured.
All insurances I have dealt with require a main car insurance to get the Mini insured under a classic car insurance. Also, the Mini is too old to insure under the main insurance.
Has anyone an idea how I could insure this 1969 Mini, so that I could drive it legally ?
Cheers,
Christian

I had a 1969 car insured through Hibernian- now aviva as a daily about 5 years ago might be worth a shot.

Thanks. Seems Aviva has changed their policy. They also told me that the car is too old to be registered as a daily driver.
Tried so far:
Axa
Allianz
Aviva
Libery Insurance
Autoline
Carole Nash
First Ireland

Try autoline.co.uk they are in northern Ireland but will insure cars in the south.
campionins.com might also be worth a call.
Both of the above are brokers, rather than insurance companies. This can often mean that they would have a better picture of who exactly will insure you.
It does seem to be getting harder to insure a classic as a daily driver.
Both AXA and First Ireland did this up until the last year or so.

Autoline - No
Campionins - No
Shame, would have been nice to have one more Mk2 on the irish roads.
Thanks for all the previous feedback.
Cheers,
Christian

As far as I know if you get several refusals then an insurance company must give you a quote. Not sure exactly how it works but its the law.

You need 3 letters of refusals and then go to the insurance ombudsman and they will assign you an insurance company which will have to quote you. if it is sky high you can go to the ombudsman again and he will access the quote and if it's unfair they will contact the insurance company.

At this stage it would seem that your best option is just to buy (and insure) a cheap 1lt car ('90's micra/ Seicento, etc ?) and then take out a classic policy on the Mini.
You would probably pay less for both policies than insuring the Mini as a daily.

Thanks for the hint regarding the refusal letters. Might give this a try.
Though, it seems to be a bit of a hassle until the Mini could finally be on the road. Also, the problem is that the buyer is waiting for me to collect the car.
The idea regarding getting a cheap car (plus insurance) and then the classic car insurance is not really an option as I am already struggling with parking space just for the Mini.
Though, I could transform the cheap car into a little cube (for space saving reasons). But I guess I will need to prove to have the car when having an insurance ... ?
Thanks again for your help and suggestions.
Will let you know how I'm getting on with this.

Hi
I use axa and they had no problems quoting it as a first car not as a classic. It was nearly as cheap as insuring a classic.
