Turbo 998

Post by VariaL_ »

Is there many in the club who have forced induction engines? I'm hoping to do a turbo conversion to my 998 shortly and would love to see a turbo conversion in person! Along with a few questions to ask.
Thanks , dave

Alright VariaL, Ive built many turbo A series minis and I found TM to be the best resource for all information, just join up and search, there has been so many build threads on there that go into great detail on everything

heres a recent build thread for a 998 turbo

There are and have been several turbos in the club over the years. The best source of information is defo turbominis.
Originally what people used to do was drop the Metro turbo unit in complete but things have moved on now and smaller turbos are the route to go with T2, GT17 or GT15 the prefaired options. Getting an exhaust manifold is proberbly the hardest part to source now.

Being that I'm young my lack of knowledge around compression ratios etc, has me puzzled regards of how much I read on forums and the net! :( I was planning on using a hif44 , t2 , small intercooler etc but I want to leave the engine as stock as possible and run in between 5-7 psi boost.
Will the standard block/ head handle that pressure? If not what would in need to replace in the meantime before hand for the engine to handle the boost pressure!
Last thing I want being a broke young lad is a blown engine!
Thanks!

Suppose I'd have to buy an ignition system management kit too? (Mega jolt etc)?

Turbo blocks are the same but the pistons are not.The piston crowns are usually thicker to handle the temperature and they are dished to lower the compression. The compression is usually lower so that when it comes on boost the compression is right. 1275 use a different head gasket but I don't know whats available for 998. You may have to fit race valves to your head to handle the heat and megajolt would be good.
If you don't want to be a broke young lad don't go turbo :(
When you talk about a "standard" engine remember 998's come in many forms from 8.4 CR to 10.4 CR with different cams , so you need to know what your starting with.

Thanks for the reply woody :) well ill have to take apart my donor engine , but I'm guessing it has flat tops etc. I got a 12g295 head there that I'm going to get reconditioned.. What sort of compression ratio would I be at with the 12g295 , standard crank, 6cc dished pistons?
Any recommendations on which 6cc pistons to choose? A link ? :)
Cheers for the help..... I sort of knew It wasn't going to be cheap but it's my dream haha!

it'l all depend on how close the piston'l get to the deck of the block and then if theres anything skimmed off the head? do you need to pocket the block for the head??
