IMOC Fort Camden Run - September 9th 2012

Post by Billy »

Last year the Southern Region had a successful visit to Fort Camden, Crosshaven, Co. Cork. Today I got a call from the project manager, Paul Brierley who has invited us back again to see all the new works completed in the past year.

http://rescuecamden.ie/

Sunday September 9th is the date we will visit Fort Camden.

More details closer the date.

Billy,

As you know, i'v been outta the loop of the mini scene for a number of years now, as in participating in runs and shows, but would love to start back with this run.

I followed the thread from when ye went last year and it looked like an event that really shouldn't be missed.
Brilliant setting/event and it's actually the typical type of event that people might underestimate, thinking that it's just another "ordinary" run, but especially with the history to it i think that anyone that can at all make it, should try to go along.

It's one event that has caught my attention in the past and would love to visit it with the i.m.o.c. as opposed to going as a "tourist" :) .

It's definatly going into my diary and i'll do my best to make it down.

Thanks Shane,

You'll be welcome down here if you can make it.

For anyone interested in Fort Camden and the visit we paid there last year, here's the thread and photos.
http://www.irishminis.ie/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=7193

As Shane has mentioned, it's great to have a mixture of driving and sightseeing on an event. In the past year, the Southern Region has visited Cobh for the start of the Titanic commemorations, Barryscourt Castle, the Lartigue Monorailway, and Fort Camden. We always get in free or at a reduced rate. To keep costs down for everyone, we encourage people to bring a flask and picnic to all our runs and we try not to have too long distances to keep fuel costs down. Being part of a club is as much about the people you meet as the cars themselves and we would like to see as many members out as possible on September 9th. This year we will be allowed park our Minis in the Parade Grounds of the Fort which will make for great photos.

Just to reinforce the point that Billy has made above, and it's something that is overlooked too often, or isn't something that new members are aware of a lot of the time.....

The Irish Mini Owners Club is NOT just about the minis, it's about the people that drive them, and the people that are interested in them that don't even have minis yet. There are as many "runs" organised as there is events to places of interest where like minded mini people can get together and have a chat, and thats what the club is all about.

But again as Billy said, through the club, as an event, there are so many places of scenic and irish historical interest that can be visited as club at a discounted rate, that most of you, no more than meself! would honestly never get around to visiting on your own.

Everyone is excited at the thought of, and going to the big runs like mizen to malin and the big car shows, but most of the local runs to places of real interest can be just as, if not more rewarding at times.

It could happen, especially if the two birthday boys didn't have to buy any drinks on the night!

Here's the plan. We'll assemble at the Maxol garage at the bottom of Carrs Hill approaching Carrigaline at 10.45am for a cuppa and a chat and once we're all together, we'll drive in convoy to Crosshaven into Fort Camden.

There's a new Tea Room in the Fort but as always on Southern Region events, feel free to bring your flask and sandwiches.

Keep adding those names to the list as I'll need to let the Fort know roughly how many are coming.

Thanks,

Billy

Actually Tom, that's a great point. As 70% of Fort Camden is underground, feel free to bring flash lamps as well.

Talking to Fort Camden yesterday, they want us to bring torches so they can bring us into underground part of the fort which are not yet open to the public.

For safety reasons with so many visitors expected on Sunday, Fort Camden are understandably not keen to have the cars leaving early or at least not in ones and twos. With this in mind, we may park the Minis in the main car park instead and go for a run along with coast once everyone has seen the fort and had their picnic.

Let me know what you think.

Had another chat with Fort Camden and they really want us to display the Minis inside. The compromise that I've reached is that instead of ones and twos leaving, we will leaving together in one group at whatever time suits our members.

That should give us the opportunity for a spin along the coast to the beach and a 99 afterwards.

Hope to see loads of ye out on Sunday morning.

A Few Pictures from Todays Visit To Camden Fort. (camera died a death half way during tour, someone forgot to charge it) so hopefully a few more will be added.
Massive day with us this year being allowed to park our Minis on the parade ground in the fort.
Big Thanks to Billy who helped put this visit together. But the biggest thanks goes to the volunteer staff that keep the whole show on the road and whom looked after us today.. Thanks Again.
This is well worth a vist by all to see in the future it has the makings of one of the biggest tourist attractions in Ireland.
Look up http://www.rescuecamden.ie and spread the good word.

The few pics I managed to get..
