Re: Are there any BMW MINIS in MTM 2012?
Hi Owen,
The simple answer is no. MTM is the only club-organised event where BMW MINIS are excluded. The reasons are:
1. Back in 1999 when I dreamt up this event, it was originally called a Reliability Run as it was an acheivement in itself to bring a bunch of cars designed over 50 years ago and not known for their reliability from one end of the country to the other in a day. If your BMW MINI didn't go the job without a hitch, you would be perfectly entitled to throw it back at the BMW main dealer. In other words, they're a modern car like any other, so where's the challenge?
2. From 2001-2006, BMW MINIS were included. The problem was that those with 1.6 supercharged engines were getting to the official stops so long before the likes of Liam Cotter in his 1973 850 that they ate all the choccie bickies before the Minis arrived. Seriously though, the speed difference was an issue. MTM is not a race and any Mini should be able to make the trip comfortably in the time allowed without breaking the speed limits. I did it myself a few years ago in a '67 850 automatic and I wasn't the last car up to the finish!
Hopefully that answers your question.
Enjoy MTM, it's a great event.

Not to tempt faith but I hope there is no need for the head gasket team to break out the torque wrench on this one.
