Painting rubber arches

Post by Evlabe »

Does anyone know which brand of primer is best for painting the rubbery sports pack arches. The ones on my car were painted by the previous owner and are very badly cracked. Wherever you touch the arches and bend them slightly more cracked paint appears. I reckon they used the wrong primer and paint. (maybe the answer is not to bend them!!!) any advice would be welcome. I've painted these rubber type arches before and never had a problem. Painted them off the car and and then fitted them without cracks. (One of the minis even had a front end smash and the paint survived!)

I would probably say whoever painted them didn't prep them properly. They would need to be scotched or water paper sanded to take the shiny plastic finish off them, then the new paint has something to stick to and little or no chance of cracking or chiping.

Aside from that there IS a "plastic primer" you can get, brands don't really matter, they all do the same job. Just use it the same as any other primer..... prep the arche - plastic prime it -prep it - paint it :)

You will need to remove all the existing paint as the original paint has not stuck and therefore if you paint over it with correct paint it will just peel off because of the existing stuff.
