If its a stag its for an 8 cylinder so no good. There should be some writing on the front ie. 4cyl, RVI. and a number. Post a picture of the back of it. Are you running electronic ingnition( what type?)

The bullet connector is the trigger wire that will run to the negitive side of the coil (white/black), the spade connector is the positive (switched) source so will connect to a switched 12v wire, and there should another spade connector on the case of the tacho, this is the earth. There should also be a buld holder as well, usually a single wire from that which will go to the dash lights, if double then one side is positive and one is earth, makes no diff which way round as its a bulb. Hope this helps

As GTM Coupe say's above, but no need for the earth for the rev counter itself as the coil it the triggering earth, the only earth required is the one for the light, which you would connect with the rest of your dash lights through the side light circuit of the mini as any of the normal dashes would be..

Simples...

Thats not entirely correct, its a miss conception that the "Coil -ve" is an earth or -ve feed, it is actually a +ve feed before the car is started and then switches on and off between +ve and -ve when started. Trust me I found this out due to not wiring mine up correctly on my current project ( got the switched 12v and the trigger wire round the wrong way, it worked but the needle would bounce up and down as the current was switched on and off, I checked with a multimeter and found the problem) Thus you do need an earth to the body of the tacho to get a correct reading and also the dash light.
