Worn syncro ring,it is an engine out job to sort it but if you know about it and take the gear changes easy it will last for a while but you should budget for a gearbox rebuild in the future.

No bother but check out prices for re conditioned boxes as the likes of Minispares do them cheaper than buying the parts yourself.

The first thing to enter me head is that there mightn't be anything wrong at all with it!! :?
Is it just when dropping to 1st, or is reverse or any other gear affected?

Probably every car will grind or clunk when dropping down to 1st gear. When you say "whilst driving", at what speed are you talking when you drop to 1st? With the way a mini is geared you'd only really need 1st for pulling away from a standstill.

Just assuming for arguments sake it is ok, and just the natural grind when going to 1st at speed, this practice WILL end up wearing the syncro and a rebuild needed eventually as kerryminigringo already said above.

Really not been smart here  , but just to be clear, At 20 to 30 mph you change down to 1st gear as you're slowing to come to a stop?

It's Just that If you're dropping down to 1st gear at 30, or even 20 mph its way to fast for a standard gearbox and it will grind and clunk, and eventually do damage if it hasn't already.

Ah i know, speed is hard to estimate, you might only have be doing 10 - 15 mph, but it's the same point anyway.

I'd have a similar driving style, threshold brakeing and using the gearbox. Makes for fun driving though, but with a standard mini gearbox not when it comes down to 1st gear! :D.

Overall it'd be better just to slow up in 2nd gear while using the brake, and just pop it into 1st when you stop, ready to take off again. There is a good range in 2nd gear, you can slow down to 5 mph (probably a little less!!) and accellerate away again without the engine labouring.
Get it checked out anyway, or better again get another mini driver to take it for a spin and you'll know straight away :) .

  ya it can happen,
along with hitting the wipers instead of the indicators,
actually forgetting what car you're in when you're driving it,
and looking for a completely different car when you return to the carpark!!!!!

30mph in second gear with a standard ratio box/2.9diff/12" wheel is 3271rpm

30mph in first gear with a standard ratio box/2.9diff/12" wheel is 5484rpm

That's some jump, no wonder it objects :?

Realistically, you should never need to be going down into 1st gear to slow or stop any car.
I'd be inclined to agree with others above and that perhaps you need to reasses your gear changing style....

Might be the angle the engine is at aswell?

have you an ultimate engine steady fitted?
how are the engine mounts/steadies?

only reason I say this is because some minis that grind or crunch into second gear do so because of this,
adjusting the angle of the engine slightly might help

I have a jack knight dog box in the rally car, its designed to be put into 1st whilst moving, eg coming into a slow hairpin and even so it does nt like it. I could nt see why you d ever have to put the car in first for normal road driving whilst moving. If it was grinding whilst moving from 1st to 2nd or from 3rd bac to 2nd i d say you have a problem.
