Supercharge me

Post by ian o B »

So its about time i got a start on this, Had this kit a while but im just finished college for the xmas so il have a bit more time to work on it. I know there is a lot of work to do to get it working right and its no way a 'bolt on job' so il give it a shot and see what can be done.

kit consists of:
-m45 supercharger with cooler.
Image

-small front mount for cooler
Image

-decompression plate + 2 head gaskets
Image

-duplex timing set
-omex ecu and loom and a few other tings.
Image
Image
Image
pump for front mount cooler
Image

The engine im going to attempt fitting it on has 60000 miles, standard, spi, regularly serviced and will hopefully will be able to handle the extra power.
Image

Had it dynod to see its putting out 65bhp, adding chager would be hoping for 100bhp.

Image

Before i start i know there will be a number of problems that il run into :| iv looked into these and hopefully they will be overcome,

1-sensors and ecu
2-air conditioning
3-NCT:
4-feuling
5-vaccum pipes
6-Brakes..to be upgraded,
7-Insurance and family members
and there will be more as time goes buy im sure..

Any comments or information someone may have will be welcomed 8)
il keep updated with progress, it may be slow but weel see how i get on.

Cool Ian can't wait to see this goin, hope the lads are treating ya well over on TM, theres a few there already, why did ya go for twin head gaskets and decompression plate over dished pistons or lower cc head? think I've a few bits from my turbo project if ur stuck,

Interested in following this, is that an oil or water cooler,, wheres the pump?
Are you sticking with injection or going to carbs?
Good luck with it.

a nice project, i'm assuming ye went decompression plate to save taking out the pistons? personaly as kenny said i'd advise dished pistons over decompression plate but its up to you mate..... are ye fitting a centre main strap?

thanks kenny..not going as far as changin pistons as of yet, might get head machined later tho :)

jason.. u might be right, if i get that far in college is another story tho

woody, its a water cooler tho seems identical to oil cooler, have electric pump for this,
hoping to stay with the injection

davey..centre main strap :?: i no the dished pistons would be the right job.. but for now il use the plate,

Now have Removed the head and fitted the decompression plate and the 2 headgaskets, gave the block, plate and head faces a quick clean, need to get a compression tester tomorrow to make sure the compression has been lowered enough.

Image

Image

Im wondering should i torque down the head a little more than i would if i was only torqueing down one gasket??

When you torque a head the 50lbs is designed to crush the gaskit a specfic amount so does fitting two gaskets half this therfore requiring 100lbs? Think you may have to look at somewhere like turbominis.com for more information or contact the manufactorer of the decompression plate.

Not getting as much time at this as i hoped but went fitting the duplex timing set today.. placed the two sprokets to check alignment.. had to remove a few packing washers to get them in line, All was good until went to put on the chain the sprokets would not line up because of this bolt in the way of the chain.. :|

Image

anyone know if it would be ok to remove this bolt or what its for??

first question..... have you got the timing gear on the right way around? looks to me from the drawings (http://www.somerfordmini.co.uk/eshop/in ... age&id=114) that the longer side faces the engine..

edit: that bolt holds the plate to the block. you need it. trust me on that one.

for the duplex ian you have to countersink a hex bolt into it, search for it over on TM its common practice

Kenny is correct, you always have to countersink the bolt to use the duplex chain set.

I hope it's a vernier kit you got. 8)

Its the norm to replace the bolts with countersunk screws to clear the chain

Time for a quick update on this, with a week off college had some time to make some progress..,
had removed the engine and fitted a minispares 4 pin diff
Image

Image

Image

took a while to sort a problem with it but ended up sanding the fibre washers to get the diff to free up
got the bolts countersunk for the duplex timing chin

Image

timing cover had to be modified for duplex timing chain and oil breather was in the way of charger belt, so it was removed and a piece of metal was welded to cover the open hole left behind.
not the best looking welds but should do the job bit off sealer and some black paint to tidy it up, new oil seal and itl b fine :P

exhuast manifold heat wrapped to help keep everthing a bit cooler,

lots of work still to do so il keep at it and keep this updated.
