The usual cause of petrol smell in the car is the overflow pipe at the top of the fuel tank either falling off or splitting. Check that it is connected and that the bottom of it is protruding through the relevant hole in the floor.

Hope it helps,

Billy

No breather on a van Billy, and the tank is under the rear floor.

Any smell of petrol will be coming in from the engine bay.

that's if it's petrol fumes that Suzanne is talking about?
it may be exhaust fumes?

could you clarify it for us Suzanne please :D

I would have thought exhaust fumes and yes the back door seals make a big differance, theres a big area of low pressure behind the car that sucks everything in. I don't know if you can get new door seals but on my woody I fitted an extra seal ( quaderant) all the way around the opening on the body that sealed mine.

Thanks guys ...sorry I should have explained better but yes its exhaust fumes...I know my back doors are not great at the bottom (a bit rusty :( ) and the rubber seal is very bad on one...so maybe that is where my problem is.

I'll get onto Ian and Woody where do you get that other sealant?

Maybe then I can drive with my windows Closed :) :) :)

also, if your manifold-to-exhaust joint is not 100%, you might be getting fumes through the gear-stick gaiter.

If your only getting fumes with windows open I'd go with Keiths idea.
I think I got the seal in Keoghs in Dublin but any good motor factors should be able to get it.

Hi, I carry new seals for the Estate and vans, but if as you say the bottom of the door is not in good shape then perhaps trying what might turn out to be a cheaper option anyway is the seal that Woody has mentioned... worth a try if its not to expensive..

The new seal on the door will be a very good investment in the future, but not really until you have repaired or replaced the faulty door... New rear doors are available but at £200.00 each not a cheap fix either, (there are some decent or repairable doors out there, but sourcing them will be the difficult part)

If you need any further help, just PM me or pick up the phone
