Mark caffos mini had a similar issue, a knock around the clutch, Im not 100% sure what it was but he had the engine rebuilt. the noise only happened under revs, and came from the clutch side of the engine.
Hopefully its not this, his was a 1275 spi.
Perhaps its a bearing in the transfer gears or the oil pump?

Is it a single knock when reving or a constant knocking when you increase the revs.

Yeah easy once you get to them but it requires the engine out and the flywheel off, dependent on which bearing has gone depicts on how much further you need to strip the engine, I would say once the flywheel is off you should be able to do them from memory?

You *could* do them with the engine in the car? Just take off the casing, but Engine out is waaaay easier, as some of the bolts can be a PITA with the engine in.

Its best to replace both at the same time.
Ideally you need an internal bearing puller.
Personlly I wouldn't even try with engine in car.

The puller for the needle roller bearing in the top suspension arm fits the idler bearing.

Grease and a suitable socket will get the one in the housing out
