Help -Convert from Drum to Disk Brakes

Post by rmc123 »

I am trying to change my front drum brakes to 8.4" disks on my 1979 pickup. When I changed them over I have found that the 13" Minilite are rubbing badly against the front of the wing on the passenger side and badly on the back of the wing on the drivers side when I turn the wheel right.

Could this be because the tracking is now badly off even though it was right before?
Do the disk push the wheels out further?

Any advice would really be appreciated

Discs have a wider track and 13" wheels are generally wider so you need to cut the front of the wheel arch. Sportspack minis have a different steering rack which reduces the turn and stops the wheel hitting the back of the inner wing but most people don't bother to change the rack. If you used the steering arms from your drums the tracking should be ok.
By the way ,they didn't make pickups in '97!!

Thanks for the info, I'm using the same steering rack. The problem is not that it’s rubbing the back of the inner wing but rubbing on the outer wings.

You are right about the year, I meant 1979 not 1997.

I think my only option is to change back to the drums or change to 12” wheels.

Some deep 12" wheels have the same problem.
I've never heard of a wheel hitting the rear of the wheelarch, you may have another problem.
Measure the distance between the centers of wheels on both sides and see if there the same.

I got these from KAD (second from bottom)

No rubbing from mine at all and they're very cheap

Interesting, never knew about them. But these won't solve this problem as its rubbung the outer wing not the inner one.

Hi Keith, Yes this is my pickup. I think I was behind you coming down the steep hills into Enniskerry. I was on Drums then, Got the disks from Bert last week.

Thanks Steven for the suggestion but Woody is correct, this is not the problem I have.

I checked with the lock both ways and it rubs the outer wings.

If somebody was able to lend me a 12" wheel for an hour to see if I need to change the wheels I would really appreciate it.

I live in Naas, Co.Kildare.

Look at the first picture in this post and you see the wing and A panel need to be cut for what look like the same 13" wheel on Tony's car.
