fairly new to minis but over the last few weeks i got the bug and im now addicted.myself and my brother bought one each and are well on the way to getting them on the road.
my 1991 has the pink resister wire to the coil, theres no markings on the coil so i dont know if its ballasted or not but when the key is in the on position or running the resistor wire gets very hot right back to the fuse box.
my question is am i better off replacing the resistor cable and fit a new full 12v feed to a standard 12v coil and if so how far to go with the new cable to the fuse box or to ignition switch? or go with a ballasted coil and stick with the resistive cable.
i dont want to end up with an engine fire or a melted loom....
If you want to replace the ballasted coil system then all you need to do is run a new +wire from the ignition -switched terminal on the fuse box.
Personally I would do away with the ballasted system as this just means buying a new coil, and you then know for certain what you are using if you need to replace anything later.

thanks for that.it seems to be the way to go.i found the code for the coil i have its a standard lucas ballasted coil, code (dlb 102).but it must be faulty to cause the wire to get so hot and is sluggish to start the car.will replacing the ballast system have any other effect on the engine or ignition system?
