Re: Clubman Estate Barn Find - Co. Galway
As the lads said above, theres a lot of panels there!. I remember the last one of these i did, had to replace 9 panels just in the back, along with the corners of the bed floor...vice grips and panel clamps everywhere!! Just dont forget to have the doors lined up so they close before you start the welding (i nearly did)
It don't look too bad overall though, it'l be a nice one when it's finished.
I wonder is there a spare wheel well from any other make of car that could be used? One that would be small enough to drop in neatly and it would also be big enough to take a mini spare, as other makes run a 13" minimum.

Shane,
Only that I drove the same car 20 years ago, I wouldn't go to the trouble and expense.
The plan is to have it ready for the IMM in Italy next year.

Re: Clubman Estate Barn Find - Co. Galway
With the bank holiday weekend, I decided to take the Clubby out of storage and back to my own garage. Done a lot of staring at it since. It's time to bite the bullet if I want it ready for Italy next year.
The 850 engine currently in it is solid so poured diesel down the bores. If I can get it going, I might bring it to the Track Day for the crack.

Re: Clubman Estate Barn Find - Co. Galway
Got stuck in on Saturday and started the stripdown of 570JIM
I knew this car had had the engine changed from an 1100 to an 850 but it must have had no power at all with this air filter which was completely black both on the outside AND the inside:
The space around the engine in a Clubby is brilliant which meant I could leave carb, rad, starter etc on the engine which sped up the job hugely.
Next on the list is drop it back on its wheels and take out the interior. This project has to be done on a budget so I'll be reusing as much as possible and sourcing secondhand bits where available.

Re: Clubman Estate Barn Find - Co. Galway
The exhaust was knackered and taking up too much space so this
became this....
Eventually will be replaced by a suitable RC40 or Maniflow but that's a long way off yet!

Keith, took your advice on engine. Mechanicals will slot into place once bodywork is sorted.

Busy evening in the garage. Removed complete wiring loom and everything in engine bay along with heater, dash, and soundproofing inside.
Put it back on its wheels as it's getting crowded in the garage now that the Hornet is back.
Anyway, slowly getting to a stage where I can assess the full extent of the rust.

The panel beater who did my black Princess last year was able to fabricate some panels/sections that wouldn't be available in a million years.
Such skills are rare these days.

As you'd say yourself KMG, real Clubman Estates have square fronts.

Next you'd want cruise control, heated seats, and a 5th door. Where would it end?woody wrote:Stick a diesel in it for IMM's

Been busy doing more stripping to get it ready for bead blasting.
Passenger door removed and stripped
The crossmember may need replacing
Next up is the driver's door and rear doors.
