Advice on selling car (not trying to sell car in this thread

Hello!

First, i know there is a 'For Sale' thread, and that's where I'll be posting my (beloved) mini when I get organised. (I want her to go to someone who'll look after her, so I'm hoping to sell to someone who already knows & loves minis!) I'm just posting here to ask for some advice.

Basically, due to the recession etc etc I may have to sell my mini (which I'm very sad about as I love her). I've never sold a car before, so I was wondering how to do it. Do I ask for cash? If not, how do i know a cheque won't bounce after the new owner has driven off in my (I mean, their new) car? can I ask them to put money in my bank account before I hand over the car keys? and so on ...

any advice from seasoned car sellers?

Thanks in advance.

most sales are cash and carry. if they want it they'll pay for it(within reason)

Helen,

Take loads of photos and give an honest description of the car, its good points (if some new parts have been recently fitted) or known bad parts e.g. rust on doors, crunch going from 3rd gear to 2nd. If it has current tax and NCT, then this is also considered a good selling point. State the mileage in your ad. Give the car a good clean and a hoover. Clean all the inside windows and the dashboard as well.

When it comes to price, be realistic in the current climate. Prices have dropped dramatically in the past year. People may still be asking big money but asking and getting are two different things.

PM me if you want an idea of pricing.

Hope it helps,

Billy

Depending on the value of your car, if you ask for cash, you might want to close the deal in time to give you a chance to lodge the cash in the bank. You don't really want €2,000 to €6,000 in cash sitting in your house

Thanks very much, Billy, and Dave, I certainly will be going straight to the bank.

I'm planning on taking photos whenever we get a nice sunny evening this week, and I will indeed make sure the poor little car is looking her best.

I feel very disloyal to my car, discussing selling her like this!

Thanks again for all your advice.

just reading this now...... bright sunshine isn't the kindest on cars..... a cloudy day is much softer on the paintwork..

compare these two:
