Has anyone tried the halford's own brand 20 W 50 engine oil?

dave, yes i have it in the SPi at the moment... about 2000 miles so far, inc a rather quick trip to cork & back.
found it to be a little "thin", and not sure how well it likes constant high speed (4000rpm for 2 hours); after coming off the m/way i noticed the pressure had dropped to below 50 psi at idle..
what had you been using?
*edit* i note that Ashgrove Interparts had COMMA 20w50 available 2 weeks ago when i was in. priced similar to Halfords.

Ashgrove buy oil in by the pallet. If there was enough interest they would probably buy in a pallet of a good brand 20w 50 for us.

Is halfords own brand antifreeze coolant ok? It complies with BS6580 standards so i assume so?

antifreeze is a whole different matter... . pretty much anything with a bit of anti-corrosive and anti-freezing properties should do. unless you are running and alloy head.... . . anyone? paul???

We had to replace the whole coolant (was only rusty water!) and that Halfords stuff (ready mixed, 5ltr) is OK, I did some research beforehand.
Never had any problems, but we only have been doing short trips only: <30km.

ashgrove interparts have two 20w50 oils.... both by COMMA, one 4.5lt @ 18.50 euro in a plastic bottle, another 5lt @ 30.00 euro in a tin, marked "classic".
i'd want to know whats in the tin to be 50% more expensive than the other...
on the other hand, i did find a new 5lt of duckhams under some stuff in my shed...

I use halfords 20w50, Never used anything else, car is fine, no rattles bangs or issues. Its e19.99 for 5lt and you get 15% off witha axa insurance policy.
I have a Trade Card and I got Bosch HT Leads and Ngk Bcpr7es plugs, 20w50 oil all for under €35. Cheap Service, I usually order Unipart fiters from minispares when im getting stuff from them as I dont really trust any other Brands.

duckhams do a 20w50 engine oil, its known as duckhams Q 20/50,,, duckhams is now distributed by castrol so any motor factor should have a few tins in stock,, not used it myself as i have been using 10/40 in my spi since 2000,,,the only problem i have is gear rod seals about once a year,, maybe a thicker oil wouldnt leak or maybe that seal is just one of those lovely mini quirks that we come to take for granted?

No matter what year mini your best stick with the 20/50. The gearbox needs the thicker oil and the mpi boxes are soft enough as it is so need all the help they can.

yeah, followed the whole discussion in the German forum:
Irish weather: 20W50, you can do 15W40 over Germany's winter - like -10°C to max 5°C

So would have been nice in the last winter here as well.

Personally I am using Millers Mini Oil (Miniquip sells it), and I believe that extra 5€ are not too much.

Some guys go with Motorcycle Oil, especially if the engines are tuned. Not a bad call either since there are a lot of similarities.
