1988 Mini Designer

Found this last week and the second I seen it I loved it! It's a 1988 Mini Deigner/Mary Quant, white 1lt carb with 8,000 odd miles with M.O.T certs to prove that! I have a few problems though, as much as I love this Mini there is some strange things happening with it. With only 8,000 miles it has been resprayed, the gap between the scuttle panel and wings has been filled, it's missing a rear valence and also missing the Desiner bumpers, grill, head light surrounds and the Designer decals (be it has been resprayed so there one reason why they ain't there) and it does say Designer on the V5 and the date matches up with the production of the model. Here is pictures of all the concerned above and some.

if you are able to, check the chasis numbers are correct,
tbh, if it is a mary quant they should have restored it properly and it would be worth a bit more,

offer him €100 and if he doesn't accept tell him you're reporting him to the authorities

i'd say its riddled with tin worm underneath that paint and fillers

In bits? In what way Kona? It's not bad at all in my eyes!

The chassis and reg plates all match up Mr. Mack, forgot to say that it is on Northern Irish plates.

And if the price is right it will be brought back to standard if I can get my hands on the parts which I'm having trouble finding.

If it has been left out in the rain could easy need a respray after that time. Doesn't need to be driven to rot.

Stan,

My advice would be to bring someone who knows Minis inside out to get a second opinion. From the photos, it's clear it's full of fillers, especially at the scuttle/wing joints at both sides. Anyone who does that must have been in a hurry to turn the car around and probably cut corners elsewhere as well.

Whats the paint quality like on it stan, cause it looks like in some places it has been painted with a brush!

And beware of the wing to scuttle joins, when I was looking for a mini I seen one like that and by using a cloth and magnet, we found that there was very little metal left. Its a very original and rare mini but it looks like its been bodged.

Don't walk away from this one, run as fast as you can. It has clearly been sprayed by somebody who hasn't a clue about minis or bodywork in general. The filler in the wing to scuttel will crack,no rear valance( a 30min job in a proper workshop) why are the floors black? engine bay is manky and the boot wasn't even cleaned. My guess would be the 8,000ml car was writen off in an acceident and has sat in the corner of a workshop for years before this "repair"or reshelled into an old shell. What dates are on the MoTs

that car is ropey as fcuk, run as fast as you can, and name and shame the garage ,if its local id love to have a look around it, that is not a genuine mary quant, wheres the chassis plate/number, theres overspray on the cables in the boot, the removable body seams look doodoo, the window rubbers dont sit right, and the chrome inserts are missing from the screens, the bootlid, front wings, scuttle are full of filler, the exhaust is held on with a cable tie, the bonnet doesnt sit properly, the numberplate light wasnt taken off before painting, the lenses and filler strip have been painted over, the missing valance, hubcap missing, the schultz on the underside and sills, whats it hiding, im not going to go on, but as i said its ropey ,i wouldnt touch it with a barge pole unless it was about €200 max, id love to go and view it and bring my camera aswell, where is it and how much is it......

SAVE YOUR MONEY AND PUT IT INTO STUD...........

Thats way too scruffy for an 8k miles car. Maybe someone put a new clock into it after it did about 80k .

The Mini is in O'Mara's Toyota on the Tipperary Road, Limerick in their 3-storey showroom.

If a garage has a TAN number they can store and advertise foreign or unregistared vehicles but they must be regististered on Irish plates before delivery unless sold to another garage with a valid TAN number or being exported.
Where you work kona? Tax office?

Well dodgy looking Mini, even the photos don't hide it's many faults - steer clear Stan.

If I made you guess youd never get it.

I work part time in halfords, the Computers were made fool proof there a year ago. For the benefit of our British collegues, they just decided that to find the correct part you just enter in the vehicles reg. It throws up all the info for it(well registered info).
Only works for British Regs, doesnt for Irish.

Handy tip if anybody wants a rough history check, makes piston heads fun in work too :)
