well,finally got my first insurance today and am well chuffed.decided to go out with my dad to take it for a spin,was out 15 mins and i could feel the clutch getting softer,has come to the point were it wont go into gear at all.does this mean new clutch or has anyone had a similar problem?

Sounds like the hydraulic fluid leak check the level of fluid in the reservoir and look around the clutch housing for signs of fluid spillage

got my dad to pump the pedal while i looked for leaks.i can see a rubbery washer that fluid seems to be leaking from.its were the clutch slave cylinder is???sorry not to good with mechanics

Yip thats the problem you lost hydraulic fluid. Is the washer on the flexible hose going from reservoir to the clutch?

ye just were the clutch engages you can see fluid bubble.is this a big job to fix??

no, easy.. fill the fluid back up to normal level... you could just tighten the nipple (the little nut where the fluid is leaking from) and check if it still leaks but more than likely air will have got in so you will need to bleed it as follows:
get ur da out to give you a hand.
get the right sized spanner and place it over the nipple (where the fluid is leaking from) - turn and open the nipple a tiny bit so ya get a drip of fluid coming out, tell your father to push in the clutch and hold it there- while he holds the clutch pushed in you close the nipple, tell him to release the clutch and repeat untill your happy that there is only fluid dripping out..
(from past experience, took about 3-4 go's)
NOTE@: make sure to put a rag or something underneath the nipple to catch the fluid, the fluid eats through paint = BAD

thanks a mill for the reply.i think im after feckin the whole thing up as the nipple keeps turning like the threads are gone?will this need replacing now.thanks for the help.was lovely being able to drive it till this happened.

Hi Karl,

it would probably be best to replace with a new slave cylinder, they're not expensive and once its replaced it'll be a worry off your mind,
judging from what you said so far it sounds to me like the rubber plunger inside the slave cylinder had perished anyway,
its a common thing to happen on old slaves when they havent been used for a while,

once replaced, just bleed it through and you'll be right as rain

Its a good starter job and easy to do. You will then know how to bleed brakes too. Try a local motor factors for the part. What area are you in ??

is your clutch Verto or non Verto?

its an 84 city.not too sure

when you look at it does the plunger part push a long arm or a short arm connected to the clutch housing?

Long arm - Verto

Short arm - non Verto

If its a non verto it could be worth mentioning that there are a alot of other bits that wear and snap.

The plate that the slave mounts to can snap.
The Plunger and the ball that goes into it can wear.
The bolt that pulls the mount to the flywheel cover can snap too.

I think you can get a repair kit for the slaves, I know that I got one for my non verto. cost like £5. The new slave was almost £50.

Well if it happened to yourself and Ian just after the two of yous got insurance yous may feck off if yous think yous are passing on the bad luck to me next week when my policy starts!

the first day the vent for the heater fell off.and today had a few wires burn on me!i was convinced someone doesnt want me driving it...

well now with the gearbox out of ur one i think you got it worse dan us nle ting different was you were drivin before insured!!tut tut..
