"NOT going back to carb!!!

This would sugest you are looking for reliablity so I would ask how far you want to strip the engine down?
If you are looking for bolt on mods then leave the cam, buy the best head you can afford and add high lift rockers. Then look at adding a decent exhaust system and manifold and maybe a larger throtle body.Don't forget it still needs to pass the NCT.

Apparantley the SPI ECU is the limiting factor, it cant fuel a 100bhp engine right. So much easier and cheaper to get a 100bhp carb mini. Also if yours is a 1995/6 car, you are going to find it almost impossible to pass emissions tests with a decent cam.

Id Imagine the best mod for SPI would be to fit a better head and higher ratio rockers. Then get the cam done when you decide on how to fuel it.

whats the limit on the emmisions down there?
the sw5 cam seems to be the one up here for the spi. This passes the mot coming in below the 3.5% limit.
My knowledge on this subject has been picked up through other forums, but there always is a common answer, ditch the cam before doing anything else.
The spi ecu probably cant fuel a 100bhp, but i dont think ther every was one of these made!

Was the last cooper not only 80 odd? and this would have been mpi.

if you want 100bhp from a carb you are talking 45 dcoe and 1400cc.
call me a mini snob but I only realy like them in 10's! :D

I would presume the limiting factor of an ECU injection system would be how long the ECU can open the injector so would fitting a larger injector not give you more power?

The fuel delivered to the engine is controlled by the ecu, but it gets feed back from other sensors to determine duration and timing.
This is where getting it chipped comes in.
If you want more fuel you need more air and that's where the cam comes in.
Does that make sense?

I think some german lads made a chip for the SPI, yer man keith calver said hed supply it for the UK.

The emissions down here is 3.5 co and 750PPM for SPI.

Would more air not come from a bigger throttle body/carb? whereas the cam and head, just dictates how much air/fuel you can get into the cylinder via opening the valves to a given duration?

Id Imagine on Spi you can get the cylinders to fill, but not the correct fuelling, especially up at the top end, which will cause it to run crap? Im sure you could buy another ECU for the fuelling however.

What type of power are you looking for? Merlin here would be a good man to talk to about how to go about it?

My first mods would be a bigger throttle body and a properly worked head alond with some 1.5 rockers. Then go from there. If your replacing the cam you may aswell do a full rebuild. Also It mite be worth looking at the gear ratios.

Monty was chatting about this with myself and BlackSe7en at the IMM in Poland, he was saying that when the Japanese are tuning the Spi/Mpi, the first thing they do is ditch the ECU.

What ECU do they put in? I thought there wasnt really anything you could do. Still, The emissions are going to be a serious pain.

Whats the points in spending a couple grand to gain 20-30bhp?
