Help with leaking windscreen please?
Hi all, any advice would be greatly appreciated:)
Just replaced the cracked and chipped windscreen in my mpi cooper and after the recent monsoon-like rainfall i've discovered that it's leaking:( the rubber isnt perished and the screen fits snuggly so does anybody know what the problem could be? There was a bit of rust but only surface, was all very solid.
Been talkin to a few mechanics and they've all pretty much said to lift the rubber with a screwdriver and fill all the way round between it and the glass with silicone from a hardware shop, and cut away excess when dried, to seal wherever the water is managing to find its way in. Is this the best thing to do? What should i do? Any help would be great.
Cheers

Re: Help with leaking windscreen please?
if you do decide to use this route DO NOT use silicone sealant.................
it contains salts and corrosives which will, in the long term, do more harm than good,
get yourself some Tigerseal, its available from any decent motorfactors and can be gotten in black colour,
bead this in under the window rubber, body side and window side,
if you wanted to do this preperly you'd have to take out the windscreen and inspect the lip that the rubber sits on, it should be in perfect condition!, if not you will need to repair it before fitting the windscreen rubber,
use the Tigerseal to seal the rubber to the lip and also then to seal the window to the rubber

Re: Help with leaking windscreen please?
I found out from a guy on this site this is down to the later rubbers being larger and sitting over the outer lip of the scuttle and so not sealing properly thats why so many later cars have rotten scuttles the water runs up under the seal sits there and rots out the scuttle the answer i am told is to use the older type shorter rubber

ALL YOU NEED IS POWER AND LOADS OF IT!!!

Re: Help with leaking windscreen please?
Returning from IMM2008 we visited Mini Spares, with Paul Kelly ( MiniFix). When we asked him why he was buying so many Mk3 windscreen rubbers, his reply was the same, "The later ones don't seal properly". A few more of us bought the Mk3's.
(I still have to fit mine).

Re: Help with leaking windscreen please?
Use the mark 3 type of seal.
I replaced mine recently with the mark 3 as the old seal leaked and caused lots of rust .
