petrol gauge trouble

when i turn on my ignition my petrol guage (on a 2clock, 998cc) the needle flies straight up to full, even tho the tank could be empty, anybody know how i could fix this problem?

There is a short somewhere in the wire to the fuel sender.
Check the connection on the fuel tank and trace the wire from there.

could it be that the gauge inside the tank, is twisted or wound up?
i'll check the wires too

If it is not a wiring problem you can get the petrol tank sensor and the gasket from ebay for 15quid, the installation is extremely simple, there is only one way it would go in, it took me 15 min and I never saw one before.

Highly unlikely, the sender being the problem can be ruled out by disconnecting the spade terminal from the tank and turning on the ignition. If the needle goes to the full position then it's still shorting somewhere along the wire.
