Chice of Number Plates

Post by unfit »

Hi Folks,

I will be buying number plates for the mini soon. The Reg, Number is 79WH583.

I was wondering whether:

1. What style of plate (Colour, size, shape, lettering) is legal on a car with reg. number such as that.

2. Which stlye/colour do you think would look best on this:

I know that its largely a matter of personal choice, but I was wondering what you think.

regards,

Brendan

Thanks for that Miniman,

yeah, I was thinking the same about the black and silver. Are there different styles of black and silver? Raised letters ? etc .
Also was wondering about a square plate on the front ? Would it be legal and how would it look ?

Well i like the raised letters on them and as for the front plate, you could use a square on the front till the guards ask you to change it.But it mite be an idea to have the correct ones in the car incase you meet the wrong guard just to say your only after gettin them.

Silver and black would be legal on a car of that age and I don't see why a square plate on the front would be illegal so long as it is legible.I will be putting a square one on the front of my GT.

i think it would look good with a square plate on front and a standard long plate on the back (black and silver of course)

THanks for that lads,

looks like its black and silver then. I kinda thought square at the front myself as well. The only concern I had was that it might look a bit like those plates that are fitted on the back of some of the Jap import cars that you see around. But looking at your Clubman Macker I think it really suits it.

Try http://www.eireplates.com/

They have a function on their site that you can type in your reg and try it in the different shapes and styles.

Thanks for that link Steven. Good to have it.

Clubman, the colour is an old Fiat/Alfa shade called Giallo Ginestra. It was reintroduced a while back on some of the "sporty" cinqacentos, puntos GTs and Fiat coupes. A few Lancias as well.
They call it Broom Yellow.
I liked it because the shade seemed to have more depth than some of the other bright yellows around.

I have seen photos of quite a lot of the 60s and 70's British race/rally cars with stick on reg. numbers on bonnets and front panels. MG, Triumph, Jags, Minis etc.
I am not sure about the legality of running a road car with reg. numbers displayed like that.

I don't think they would be as if they were just painted then the numbers would not reflect ie. if you were to shine lights on a reg plate it stands out from the rest of the car as it lights up but then again the silver and black reg plates wouldn't have done that and your car is legal to have them so maybe. The amount of people I know with no reg on the front of there Mini what soever though!

I doubt very much that the silver and black ones would reflect light back, this is why they are fitted to army vehicles along with the matt green paint.

If you want to stay legal, and even though you don't need an NCT, the legal plates for cars of various ages are in the NCT manual page 10 http://www.rsa.ie/SERVICES/upload/File/VT/nctmanual.pdf. Copy and paste the bit between the s into your web browser.
