Pre 82 - Black plates allowed
82 - 86 Red (rear) and white (Front)
86 - present Year and county (cars registered Since 1991 - font size standard - no fancy lettering etc

That is probably as close as you will get but still not 100%.
Plenty of pre 82, and 82 to 86 cars, with white plates front and rear

If the reg of the vehicle is in the Year-County-Number format (eg. 65-MH-219) then the plates have to be the Euro White type.
For the Black plates there is an official size and font type, so Fancy lettering isn't legal.
