problem!

was out in the garage last night cleaning my classics engine with a bit of degreaser and water,i was carefull of the electrics.but when i went to start it up it started to splutter and will not idle :( .im quite new to minis so would apprieciate any help whatsoever.

two probable options here...

1) you dislodged a hose or vacuum pipe.
or
2) you did in fact wet something.

my money is with the dislodged pipe.... wet electrics tend not to start at all.
do say if its an injection or carb mini although the options above are valid for both.

Another possibility is that you soaked the air filter. I've seen it happen (albeit on my Honda 50) and when I took off the filter it ran fine.

Whereabouts are you based? Maybe there's a club member living nearby?

Glad to hear you got sorted. These problems are usually quite minor but are usually the cause of much headscratching.
