air is getting in to the intake someplace? are the brakes also gone very heavy? then check the vacum pipe of the servo. (if you have a servo!)
could also be dirt in the float chamber....
could be as simple as the idle adjusting screw falling out....
how/when did this happen?
I had it happen once after i potholed the car at speed.... turned out the bang shifted the manifold down and air was getting in past the gasket.
need more info tbh.
