Dungarvan St. Patrick's Day Parade

Post by Womble »

Hello all,
Billy suggested that some of the Minis in the South East (open to all though!) might like to take part in a St. Paddy's Day Parade so I rang the organisers of the one in Dungarvan and they're all for it. They usually have a bit of a classic car section but I'm sure a line of Minis would knock spots off them! Also, they said they'd put us at the front so we wouldn't be stopping and starting, as some of the classics have conked out before while waiting for the band to get a bleedin move on.

The Dungarvan parade is on the Bank Holiday Monday, despite the Catholic Church insisting St. Patrick's Day be Saturday this year. Any takers? :D

Johnny Murphy and I will be there with 2 Minis. We'll start pushing the Cork, Tipperary, Waterford, and Wexford members to get out for the day.

Let us know what time we need to be in Dungarvan and where the cars should meet up beforehand. We can go for a spin after the parade and grab a bite to eat if there is interested.

The parade starts at 3pm so the organisers want us there for 2.15. We can all meet up at the Coolagh Road Service Station on the Waterford Road, all the floats leave from the roundabout just before Dungarvan. If anyone needs directions, contact me or Billy.

Hi all,
Change of venue for meeting point - can you all go to the Park Hotel instead of the Service Station (still on N25, first left at 5th roundabout on Dungarvan by-pass coming from Cork direction, right at 2nd roundabout if coming from Waterford direction). Apparently the car section of parade are all lining on road along bridge, so see you in hotel carpark at 2.15. If its too packed, head straight on to bridge and the stewards will place you.

If you get lost, my number is 087 639 2819, see you there!

P.S. I had tricolour ribbon to put on the car aerials but may not have enough for everybody as I bought it to use it on the dogs in the grooming parlour so if you want to bring your own balloons or flags, please do!

Great day on Monday and thanks to Womble for organising. In total we had 12 Minis in the Parade but a 13th car joined us before we left Co. Waterford. While we were assembling in a car park beforehand with all the other classic cars, I was approached by a man who was driving a Triumph Toledo on the day. He said he was into Minis himself and had a Mk2 Wolseley Hornet at home. We told him we were meeting at the Seanachai pub after the parade for soup and sambos and Eamon Foley dropped the Triumph at home, leapt into the Hornet and chased out after us!

To say this car is gorgeous is an understatement. It was featured on the cover of Irish Vintage Scene in August 2006.

Our Minis came from all over Munster. Tom O'Sullivan drove down from Limerick while Johnny, Dermot, and Colette drove from Cork. I had the family with me and we came crosscountry via Lismore. There were 8 cars from the Dungarvan area which was great as Womble had clearly been making a few phonecalls in the lead-up. The local cars included a Mk1 green Mini, a couple of blue cars, a Mini 30 with twin exhausts, and a white Mk2.
