I just bought my first mini cooper at the weekend

.. It's a 00 tahiti blue Mini Cooper.. Went to pay the VRT today and had to fork over 1300approx euro!! does this sound right? Any one else have to pay this seems a bit steep.. They said a mini cooper is not even on the system so they put it down as an Austin Rover Mini Cooper.. Is it worh my while appealing this?

Hey, as far as I know they calculate the VRT on the open market price of the car at 22.5 % of that value. So it depends if your car is a special edition or not as it is more expensive then. Also sometimes it can be hit or miss if you ring them as it depends who you get. Try
http://www.revenue.ie for the vrt calculator just to see if your car is on it and whether the price was right. Hope this helps!

yeh tried the VRT calculator but it doesn't come up.. They have it under austin but stilldoesn't work.. i rang them back in May when i first started looking for a mini and i was told it would cost €271 for a 98 mini cooper surely it can't jump that much for a 2 year newer car.. So frustrating dealing with these people, they don't have a clue in the office and the thing is they didn't even look at the car??

The VRT on my 1999 40 LE was around 690, but I was already aware that a Cooper Sports of the same year (even though mechanically identical) would be charged more for VRT.

Hi i've been trying to VRT my pick up since May but since its not on the system they we're trying to put it down as a commerical and i'm saying its a classic since because its 27 years old. I decided to wait intill its vintage and then try again.

I'm surprised they quoted you €271. I've bought a few mini from England and for most of them I was charged the minimum VRT rate for that class of car which is set at €315. Check out this link it has all the FAQ's.
http://www.revenue.ie/faqs/faq_cat8.htm .It's a big lump for VRT alright, but the newer the car the more it's worth which means the more you pay for VRT. It's an absolute pain but you just got to sit there and take it. DAM YOU VRT............

They will hit you with the minimum VRT which is €315, and you will lose your argument as the car has to be 30 years old to avail of classic tax rebates.
Over 30 years old and VRT is €50, provided it isn't on the Revenues Exotics List.

yea the VRT is a pain. Consider the case of the retired gent in Wicklow importing a 1990 merc SL, he had just paid a bill of €21.700 vrt. you could see he had worked all his life and promised himself a toy for his retirement. He was in tears telling me about it.
whats this "list of exotics" you speak of? is it available on-line?

TBH I think they make it up as they go along.
I bet if you imported a BAC-30 into Ireland, the VRT would be only €315 :lol

-I had this proplem when I brought in my Lotus, certen cars are concidered "collectable classics" and are delt with by a special office, you are not allowed to talk to these people directly so you are always dealing through a third party jusst to make things more akward. The VRT was based on market value.

I wonder if ZakGT knows that the ERA is a collectable classic

hidden, faceless people applying secret formulas in an apparently random manner, to extract resources from the citizen, contrary to the spirit of international agreements, backed up by the full weight of state sanction: no, its not North Korea, its Ireland in 2007.

and no doubt in 2008, 2009, 2010. ... . . etc.

It worked on mine...
VEHICLE REGISTRATION TAX (VRT) ENQUIRY
DATE: 09 September 2007 TIME: 21:57
VEHICLE REGISTRATION TAX:
(payable on enquiry date) €315
IMO It is scandalous tho that this VRT should be paid at all....

You should be able to get the vrt on the cooper sport on the system, i've done it before and 1300 sounds about right.
I had to pay 1012 euro to vrt my old 99 cooper le and 1250 to vrt the vtec mini. It pure rip off but it has to be paid....
On the V5 document does it say that its a cooper sport or just a cooper. It should be a good bit cheaper if its only a cooper and they'll take whatever it says on the V5.

Woody,
What Lotus and what year? I'm on the lookout for one and want to know what I might be charged for VRT. Thanks.

Thanks, Woody. I'm looking at early Elans so they'll all be over 30 years old. That should make a significant difference!

Not nessicerily.Whilst a mini over 30 years may have minimal vrt ,if the elan falls into this "collectable classic" class it may attract a higher vrt.Ring revenue for a quote base on the year and value of a simular car.If you get a quote make sure you get the quote referance number.
