Cheers

You probably need a new windscreen rubber, With age they can become hard and crack, you could try windscreen sealant, but it would only be a temporary measure. Hopefully the lip hasn't rusted to nothing underneath.

Its probably a combination of hard cracked rubber & corrosion. Even with a new shell and a new rubber you will still need sealant so don't get too upset at the prospect.

Don't use the generic "sillicone" sealant - sillicone sealant releases acetic acid during its curing stage - hence the acrid smell - this is corrosion in a tube as far as steel is concerned.

Get a purpose designed, corrosion neutral sealer, Terosan do good stuff for example, their 1KPUR is bulletproof.
