Post by Paddy2708 »

Hi lads have a mini 1 ltr she's driving and starting and ticking over no bother but if I'm going along about 50 and put the foot there the car splutters for a few seconds before she goes and also going up a hill she splutters for that few seconds any help would be great

Plugs may be fine but there colour can tell a lot about what is happening inside the engine.
Oil may be clean but how much and what grade you are putting in the dashpot will effect how the engine acceleates .
Can you give us anymore information on recent history of the engine like when it last ran right and what you have done since.

A good clean of the piston and the inside of the dashpot and chech that the piston moves freely up and down.
I use 20W/50 engine oil but some people use a finer oil. Its one of things that once you get the engine running smoothly you can change the oil to give the speed of responce you want.Heavy oil will richen the mixture when you accelerate wheras light or no oil will lean the mixture and can cause the effect you are discribing.

WOODY
You were spot on pal the cars flying done the oil in the dash pot it was clean but I say it was 10w/40 cleaned the carb and she seems to be moving now alright still think I'll stick a k&n air filter in it to let in breath that bit more .

nice one.
Be careful with the K&N , better air flow can lean the mixture and you lose the warm air intake which can help cold running in the winter.

good to hear you have it sorted

you can use a K&N filter insert which keeps the standard filter housing & air mix options - just replaces the paper element. But dont expect much improvement over a new OEM paper filter though.

I'd say your issue was a sticky/dirty carb piston - little enough difference between 20w/50 and 10w/40 in the carb. I've used everything from 90EP gear oil to paraffin. ;)
