Quick question i have been offered a 1275 auto spi engine can i just swap it into a 998 manual gearbox and put a car on it or is that possible?

No, it's not a straightforward swap.
It can be done but it needs some re-engineering and is an expensive option.

The Auto to Manual is as Dave said a job that requires a lot of engineering to get it to work, the auto engine has different oil galleries to the manual as well as a different crankshaft as it has the torque converter where the flywheel is on a manual engine.

It is a conversion that has been done in the past, I remember seeing a thread on an Australian Mini forum about it, but it was sort of a lets do it to prove it's possible thing rather than anything else.

Cheers lads i was hoping it was just a straight swap but not worry ill hold out for a manual 1275

Just swap over engine and box from a manual then you need to space the engine mounts as the auto frame is wide loop the starter interference switch. Job done

I think the lads above are wrong, as far as I know there was a big change in the later automatic gearbox to allow it take a standard block. I think Billy may have a later one that he could look .

If you want to experiment I've a 85 auto box and engine you can have to dismantle.

Cheers for the info lads I am going to leave it for the moment I've my work cut out at the moment trying to get 2 minis up to a decent standard ill wait till a 1275 manual comes up and just do a straight swap
