Car Stereo - Smart phone / iPod no need for cd or radio

Post by buttercup »

Hi All,
I'm a few weeks away from putting in the stereo, but am curious to see if anyone else has fitted this kind of set up.
So, I will play music from my iPhone or iPod, which will no doubt change size and shape with different upgrades.
I don't think I'll need to bluetooth for hands-free calls, but would be nice for a bonus feature.

So, I'll need speakers, probably only 2 and am hesitant to put them in the parcel shelf as this would mean cutting holes in the metal. Any suggestions on placement?

If I only need an amp to hook the phone to the speakers can anyone suggest what amp?
I figure this could also remain hidden in the boot and I can control everything from the phone.

The only problem I can think of would be having no volume control.
Thanks, would appreciate any suggestions.

I have a Bluetooth Sony radio in the car which pairs for hands free but not that I can really hear anyone with the noise anyway. But for music once radio is paired to the phone you can play anything on your phone through your stereo. Any stereos with a USB port will even allow you to select songs etc through the stereo and control volume etc.. Once phone is plugged in other end. So you to not even need to touch the phone. In relation the speakers, under the rear seat may be the best location if you do not want to cut into the rear parcel shelf. As far as I know there is a template on the miniforum.co.uk with dimensions to help you cut the piece of wood to place under the seat for your speakers. You could also mount a set of tweeter on the dash up front. Will help spread the sound about and are'nt to dear

Thanks Stuie.

Maybe a regular stereo is the way to go, can you remove yours or the front panel when you park?

Just been googling around the question and have found this Oxygen O-Car unit.
This is not what I am really looking for, but it does use the phone/ipod as the main source.
Anything else similar?

Yeah mine pops out the whole facia does came with a case aswell to pop it onto when you remove it. I got mine in halfords at the time.. It's a Sony unit and you just hit the source button to Bluetooth audio and away you go anything on the phone will play through the car speakers. Was'nt to expensive either you don't need anything fancy to get what you want. Halfords may be worth a look anyway to give you ideas and see stereos themselves

If you are looking for a non headunit based stereo i can highly recommend the parrot MKI9200 as it is has blue tooth usb and aux in and also allows you to take phone calls on the move all hands free

I have one fitted to my own car if you wanna drop over to me and have a look at it and try it out you are more than welcome to

As for speakers you can mount them under the seat and hide the amp in the boot under the parcel shelf and hide all the wiring

and volume can be controlled from the phone

any questions feel free to give me a call on 086 1234367

Get some dash mounted speaker pods. Speakers behind you don't work that well against the engine/road/wind noise you experience up front.
Politics is just cheap television.
