quick one for those technical minded people out there what are the setbacks (if any) with using a weber 40DCOE on a 998?
its got a 12g295 head going on at the same time, a maniflow exhaust front to back and looking at getting a mild race cam (opinions welcome).
also iv no idea about compression ratios or any of that lark so any thoughts on where to get it set up or who to talk to?

vizards yellow book is something you need to read if your messing around with the A series like that. If your looking for power either more capacity or go forced induction IMO.
A 998 will really top out about 60bhp if I remember .

more capacity meaning bore it??
not looking to build the worlds fastest mini here just something that packs a punch without going crazy.
relatively simple bolt on upgrades would be ideal to be honest.

If you're going to be putting on the 12G295 head I'd go for a sportier cam, not sure which one as that would be a personal preference, have a look into them yourself,
The Webber 40 on a 998 is complete overkill and will only see you using more fuel, the standard Hif is more than adequate to cope with that kind of set up, and make sure you have a good air filter! K&N do pancake filters but also do a straight swap filter for the one that fits in the original airbox!
as for getting it set up their are a few people that can do that for you,
HRE, Hickey race engineering - Paul Hickey (called Merlin on here)
Mini fix - Paul or James (normally using the name Jocelyn here)
Lloyd Hutchinson - Pattersons garage in Delgany
Westward engineering - Martin tracy
that's just a few, there are others here that can do this for you too!

I'm with macker here, the webber is just overkill
There's notting wrong with a HS4 carb with mods
And is perfect for the 998
As for a cam
I have a 998 with a sw5 cam and it and it's great
It think there's a new version of the cam out now don't know what it's
Like....

really appreciate the help on this.
so the 40's are out for the 998.
what about on a 1380? too small?
Everyone seems to rave about the sw5 cam so ill be sure to have a look into it.
Another question for you. how important is a thermostat??
Is running a blanking sleeve etc. safe enough or for a road car should it really have one??

webber 40 is fine for a 1380, as is the standard HIF (the standard HIF is well capable of handling power increases up to around 120bhp on an N/A tuned mini)
The thermostat is there for a reason!
you can run a mini without one while using a blanking sleeve but why would you do that?
If you want a little more cooling or for the water to circulate a bit before you're up to opening temperature, just drill 4-6 small holes around the inside of the lip on the thermostat roughly 2-3mm in size,
As for the SW5 cam, I have no experience with them so can't help you

don't forget the the manifolds.. you mentioned maniflow above, small bore is what you need to keep the gas speeds up - also, there are good and less good intake manifolds - i had good results from a water heated mini$port one - and yes, for a road car i would go with the water heated one.
if you can find an HIF38 carb that would be better than the HS4

Reason for asking is the bypass hose has been welded closed on the 12G295 head so really just would have been a whole lot easier if it worked well with a blanking sleeve.
But sure no one said minis were easy..just loads of fun.
Great to hear about the 40's suiting the 1380 they look savage apart from everything else.
Regarding the manifold were talking exhaust here right?
Got the half stage one kit from mini sport so assuming that will do the job.
I'll keep my eyes out for the hif38 so
Cheers
