Just on the insurance issue, If your car has a valid Nct, and is involved in an accident, they can refuse to cover it if they see bald tyres! And the Gardai can prosecute you for not having insurance if your tyres are bald! I kid you not. So bad tyres means no insurance as it is an Nct fail. Not sure, but maybe if other failures left unfixed can mean the same? even with a valid Nct disk on the window! But be aware!!
