If you reshell a car in Ireland, you can keep the old Reg Number, but you have to pay the VRT and Vat on it as if it were a whole brand new car. Even if you do all the work yourself, the VAT is charged (somehow) on the number of hours it is reckoned to take to rebuild the car.
That was the (VAT) story 20+ years ago when I was looking at reshelling a Mini with a Mini Marcos shell.

There used to be a thread about that car on MR, as far as I remember it's another 83/84 English import.

The €1600 suspension upgrade mustn't have included a new one so.

Some people eh:

Seriously, if your going to bullshit you might aswell do it right. Designer "Mary Quant" edition came out in 1988. A person has possibly stuck plates of an older mini to possibly bypass the VRT or to get cheap tax, tis really annoying at times.

yea it pisses me off to.
*but* I've no way of knowing if the person selling it put the plates on or did they buy it already "plated"... knowingly or otherwise? So possibly unwise to call him names and allege fraud - until we know for sure?

I agree Keith. This is so obviously wrong though, while it may be possible to have an imported legitimate reshell it isn't possible to transfer an old Irish reg to a newer car.

There was never a Mary Quant limited edition. It was actually called Designer.

I have no problem with a reshell job when every thing off the old car goes onto the new but correct Mk shell. But I go mad when someone just changes the number plates :x

Your dead right, post has been edited. As for the calling names part, end of the day it looks as if some clown just put plates on it whether it was done by the current or past owners.
