Re: Engine Issue
I know, pictures arent the best The tube coming from underneath the carb is fine, its the one going into an L shaped pipe (second photo with the torch beam on it).

Re: Engine Issue
Vacuum line? or could it be the crank breather?
Where does the pipe end up, servo or down onto the engine?

Re: Engine Issue
the pipe coming from below the carb, likely to have screw clamps on it, is the fuel feed from the pump, below the exhaust manifold on the back of the block.
the other pipe attached beside the fuel feed, is a fuel overflow from the float chamber (little metal cup that sits to the side attached to the carb).
that pipe just drains away any possible overflow down the side of the flywheel cover away from the hot exhaust.
wont affect the running of the engine at all. *however* if its overflowing it indicates a possible problem with the float valve.
other pipes attached to the carb include a vacum advance pipe which is a really narrow plastic type from the distributor to the carb.
you may also have a breather hose from the timing chain cover (1300cc) tappet chest (998cc) and transfer case.

Re: Engine Issue
Looks like the overflow so! Thanks! Its from the little barrel type unit under the carb. It doesnt look like its anything majorly important. I noticed it ages ago and totally forgot about it. I might just get a new hose anyway and reattach it just in case.

Re: Engine Issue
Right, this issue is sort of manifesting itself again. Took for a good half hour run today and was getting intermittent revs. This time I had no need for the choke to be out, and the revs werent dying. If you could imagine its like hitting the rev limit very low down. I accerlate and the car splutters (but doesnt cut out or revs drop). Any ideas?

Re: Engine Issue
whereabouts in Dublin are you?
~edit~ could be electical... new-dave had a similar rev-drop/cut out on the xmas run. apparently a faulty condenser.

Re: Engine Issue
West Dublin! How would I know if it's a condensor, or how to fix it? It's driveable, just concerning!

Re: Engine Issue
not really any way to "check" the condenser. they are cheap enough. check the condition of the points too: if the condenser is faulty it could lead to the points burning out, giving poor running, also check the gap of the points, best way is with a dwell meter, if you dont have one then set the gap to the correct amount. i dont know it off hand.
also check the low tension supply to the coil. connection should be clean and tight, at either battery voltage or half voltage.
spark from the coil should be big fat and easily heard. if in doubt, measure the resistance of the coil, both low tension and high tension side. if not to spec, replace the coil.
if all this and the ignition timing checks out ok, then its down to petrol.

Re: Engine Issue
Right, looks like I may have found out the issue. When it was happening before, I generally had lots of things on, lights, rear demister and heater. Yesterday, I only had my dips on, and had no issues. Today, I had my lights and rear demister on, and it acted up. Turned off the rear demister and then it seemed to be ok. Linked or just coincidence?

Re: Engine Issue
Could well be linked. Sounds like weak spark to me from the start. could be from a number of different things most of which have been mentioned. Points condition or gap, condenser, plugs or leads or even just damp or dirt in dizzy cap. All the lights heater and rear window on will cause extra drag on altenator meaning a small drop in amps which would usually be no problem but if there is an issue there it would.

Re: Engine Issue
Im going to take out the Dizzy and give it a clean and see. Drove it again this morning, was fine for about 5 minutes, then it started "maxing" out at around 3k revs, and sounded very "spluttery". It was fine for a few minutes, went dodgy, then went ok, then went dodgy. If I pull out the choke it accelerates fine, and if I push in the choke it slows down fine.

Re: Engine Issue
If you have to pull out choke to make it accelerate looks like youre carb needs cleaning, had same thing happen years ago, there was dirt in carb blocking needle at times. On opening float chamber found it to be full of bits of dirt.I had no inline fuel filter fitted. So when got dirty petrol it went straight into carb.
