nice route billy.... are you using a dedicated GPS or, like me, using a smartphone with GPS app? if app. which one and does it use the via-michelin route you created?

my route-app of choice is "NavFree" which uses Open Street Map data, but ive not found an online mapping service that will talk to it. yet!

We'll just do as we did for the trip to Switzerland and follow the printed out instructions from ViaMichelin. Maeve has been swotting up on map reading. Personally, I have no "Faith" in those GPS thingies.

I would be more inclined to head South as TMG said and come in along the Riveria, what you gain in avoiding tolls you lose in petrol costs and it takes nearly double the time in driving.Personally I will be mixing motorway and A roads for the trip to Mugello and the return will be mostly A roads as there will be less time constraints coming back.

I have been contacted by most attendees of the IMM about T shirts and sizes.Anyone going and who has not contacted me and wants one should get in contact before Friday the 19th as I will be putting the order in.

Well gents,

Any thoughts on alternative routes? I'm sticking with my original plan unless someone comes up with another that doesn't involve €130 in tolls.

23 days to the ferry!!!

It takes 8 hours driving longer to get to the IMM avoiding tolls than using the motorways.I think a mix of motorway and A roads would be the best.Arrive at the IMM relaxed and fresh ready for a weekend of partying and have a relaxed drive back to the ferry using A roads

The 15 hours on the motorway is based on motorway speeds but as neither of us will be travelling at motorway speeds, it's irrelevant so you can add a few hours on to the 15. The expensive route also takes in the Peripherique around Paris. It's nothing short of scary! I'll definitely be steering well clear of it.

Anyone found any car museums to visit along the way (or return journey)? I visited the museums in Reims and Mulhouse en route to IMM2011 but they're not on the way this time.

im looking at this... shortest distance being a straight line etc.. will most lilkely add more autoroute sections: aiming at spending the first nigh someplace between 45 - 48

and like you, staying well away from paris. not scared of it, just it would add 6 - 8 hours to the trip i think.

retrurn journey will be via dover & holyhead, so would like to plough straight through CH although im wary and uncertain about what that entails.

If you're aiming for Dover, you should definitely try to visit either the Mulhouse (Schlumph) or Reims museums.

You've no excuse not to visit the Schlumpf as it's only over the road and well signposted.

Basicly we have 3 days driving to do a 1000 miles. 2 full days Tuesday and Wedensday , Monday we may get out of the port by 12, and Thursday we want to be at the IMM by 12.
I looked at breaking the back of it Tuesday with approx start and finish towns.
First 200miles in 3 hours on motorway tolls €30- €40 , we can skip the last toll and do fuel and lunch stop. Then 200miles toll free 5 hours driving in the alps for the afternoon.

Yuck. £121 for 400 miles is the equivalent of 20.4 mpg.

I'll stick to the slow lane and have more money for bits and beer at the IMM. It's definitely a case of hare & tortoise. I've a 1-litre with no roof so motorway speeds are out due to risk of permanent ear damage!

It stopped being €60 weeks ago. It's either €75 or €90 at this stage.
