Electric issues...

Post by Marktoby »

Hi all. Work on my 81 Austin Mini has slowed significantly, but hoping to get more time in the coming weeks to make a proper stab at it. Bit of an issue though, apart from the wipers and radio, it would seem nothing electric works. Front lights, rear lights, brake lights, indicators, horn.....nothing, all dead. Any ideas dead?

Also, as an aside, does the group have a WhatsApp group?

Thanks everyone.

Have you cleaned up the earth on the bulkhead cross member, just in front of the reinforcing triangle as you look into the engine bay on the left. You may need to remove the washer bottle of its mounted on that side for proper access.

Also the negative connection to the boot floor.

There's 2 inline fuses up under the scuttle

Also be worth taking off the connections to the fuse box and cleaning everything up.

Remove the earth lead in the boot and wire brush both surfaces and refit.

Its most likely the brown feed from the solenoid to the fuse box and the white feed to the fuse box. When chasing so many components not working you should work in this order.
Black ;make sure all earth conections are clean and tight and were repainted make sure there is bare metal contact.
Brown ;Unfused Permanent positive. Front head lights . ignition switch ,fuse box purple circuits
Purple; Fused permanent positive. Interior light. horn ,hazards
White ; unfused ignition positive, coil. fuel pump, fuse box dark green circuits.
Dark green ; Fused ignition positive . exterior lights
Light green ; fused auxillary positive . wipers . radio.
