Fuel gauge acting up

Post by jaydeluxe »

Tank in my Mpi gets signalled as completely empty on fuel gauge when it's still 2/3 full. When I top up fuel tank, reads as full but after a short drive goes to empty again.

Fuel cap seems to looser than previously...

MPi fuel gauges are known to be very bad . The first thing to establish is if the sender unit is working over its full range. Remove it ,connect to a multimeter set to ohms and move the arm fully up and down and note the reading going high and low. The reading should be gradual and not take a sudden dive.

Thanks.

Will have to find my multimeter so...

Will let you know if the sender is the problem.

Having had 2 Mpis, I can tell you that you won't fix the problem. All Mpi fuel gauges are the same. It's easier to keep a note of when you last filled and you should be OK for 250 miles or so before refilling.

 Worked perfectly for years... Could even judge how empty it really was by a fraction of a millimetre of the position of the gauge. Would hate to think it'd never work again.
