Classic insurance with no other car in my name!

Post by CB_Phil »

So with the '97 finding a new home I'm moving onto a proper classic.
I've spent most of the day calling round the insurance companies trying to get cover, But due to not having a modern car in my name (just under the wife), they won't except a motorbike either!
Only Autoline will quote, but the millage is seriously limitedlimited, 1.5k a year.
Carol Nash, Axa, Aviva, AA, 1st Ireland, FBD, 123, Chill, Adelaide all turned me down either mods, car too old or no modern car.
Anyone any experience with this?

Cheers
Phil

Most classic policies out there , u must have a full driving licence and a daily driven car, Carole Nash will insure u but limit u to driving all the time!!! I'm with axa as my daily and my classic, on my daily iv an 84 mini which is 600€ a year and on my classic iv my dohc vtec mini which is 198€ a year! Which I think is a bargain :) and the vtec is declared so it's insured 100% :) hope u get sorted
If it's bigger than a mini it's not a mini

Cheers, my only option for a daily would be to transfer the wife's car to me or the mini to her, but then one of us would loose out on the no claims. I reckon I'll just take the low mileage for the yewr

Have a chat with autoline up north. But I'm sure you will still need a daily policy. Can't hurt to ask them if they will accept the bike. They don't load up for mods either.

Your cheapest option is to get the Missus to take out a policy with Autoline (with you as a named driver). I wouldn't worry too much about the mileage restriction  .
NCB doesn't come into it as you don't build up a NCB on a classic policy.
Only other viable option is to ring a few brokers and try to get a quote for just yourself with the mini as a daily driver.
There was a Thread on boards.ie recently about the very same issue.

BTW I have a '76 with Autoline at €190 last renewal....and a '78 added on for an extra €27.

I didn't know bout the he NCB! I Got the policy earlier as I picked up to the car. But I'll be looking @ that next year. I don't mind too much as it's still a hell of alot less than last year.
No brokers will touch me for similar reasons

Normally over 25's. But try Autoline, Carole Nash, etc.
Probably better to ask a few brokers who specialise in classics, rather than the main Irish Insurers directly.

Any contact details for Autoline? I've looked on google and can only fine them in the north? or is that the same company but you have to call for a quote?

My Dad got classic insurance with fbd. You have to sign up to the vintage club which is 25 quid for the year and it was 165 to insure the mini which in an '88.

Not bad €300 to insure my 2000 cooper and 1978 shorty. €12 to add another car when the mk1 is finished. Is there any other company that would insure the 2000 as a classic.

That's great.

They also don't load your premium if you have any mods.
