last try before sending it to a garage any ideas welcome

Post by andrew.1990.rover »

I have been struggling to get my 998 rover mini started after fitting a stage one kit, inline filter and a new head.
Its sparking fine.
Fuel is getting to the carb, filling the dash-pot, but seems not to be making it to the engine.
The jet on the very bottom of the carb sometimes sticks open and seems to be rubbing against the bulkhead. I am unsure but doubtful that this is the problem.
I'm getting the feeling its something to do with the hose linking the dashpot to the carb. or maby the needle isnt moving (not sure should it move or not honestly)
Or there's something stopping fuel getting up into the carb and into the engine.
Again any ideas are appreciated.

i don't fully understand how the fuel does travel through the carb so i may have missed something key.
The timing shouldn't have been effected (by my best estimation)
Valve clearences and all that messing has been rectified.
Thats all really off the top of my head
thanks in advance,
Andy

Firstly I think what you are calling the daspot is in fact the float chamber locaded on the side of the carb. The part on the bottom is the choke and if it is sticking and hitting the bulkhead I would think it is now bent. The needle travels up and down inside the choke so this may als be bent and not moving freely so engine won't start because fueling is all wrong.. I think the first thing you should do is find out why the carb is hitting the bulkhead and fix that( did you change inlet manifold?) then remove the carb and repair or replace it.

Have you pulled any spark plugs to see if they're wet with petrol after trying to start it?

Can you borrow another carb to see if it works with that one?
