Quick engine swap question
Quick one,
Would is 1984 998cc engine/box the same as a 1990 998cc engine/box?
Reason for my question is, I am about to purchase a 1984 engine on a subframe.
I would like to swap out the engine and sub on my 1990, would this be a straight swap?
i'm guessing the hose from the heater that runs across the top will connect ok, but will i have any
issues with the brake system on my car having a servo on the master cylinder?
Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Re: Quick engine swap question
should be ok, if your new engine and frame has the drives and hubs on theres a chance that could be drums(think 84 was the change over year)

Re: Quick engine swap question
The speedo may read wrong depending on the final drive of each gearbox. You can change the manifold to give you the tapoff for the servo. Would have to check but I think the '84 is non ballast ignition and '90 is ballast. '84 is inertia starter and '90 is pre-engaged( not interchangeable). Both of these can be changed with wiring mods.

As far as i know the wiring loom is still attached to the engine, would i be able to use this to over come any rewiring?

Re: Quick engine swap question
The ballast changover came in '84 so could be either ,the easiest thing to do is just use the coil from the '90. The starter mod is easy.

Re: Quick engine swap question
I plan on installing adjustable tie rods.
Will the suspension side of things be the same?
Will i run into any problems if i use the 84 brakes with the 90 master cylinder and parts attached to the body?

Re: Quick engine swap question
If there discs and not drums they should be the exact same brakes. If they don't look the exact same maybe the '84 car had drums and somebody converted to the smaller cooper S brakes. Suspension should be the same.
