hs4 tuning

Post by daniel garry »

well lads, iv just fitted a stage 1 kit i got from minispares to the 998, freeflow manifold, RC40, alloy inlet and AAU needle. couldnt get the car started so started playing with the mixture a bit and got a little splutter and now i'v finally got it running, with the mixture nut down 9 full turns from the top! from all the info iv found online that seems like an awful way down!
surely this is way off??
anyone got any tips on tuning the hs4 so i can have it drive-able til i get it to someone who can set it all up properly?? would the likes of mcnamaras in dublin or westward in enfield be any use to me?
cheer lads

The colourtune is good for fine tuning but like you said you are way off.
Are we talking about a hot or cold engine, if its cold make sure the choke is working properly as this would do the same job as turning the mixture right up. If its a warm engine It sounds like the needle is too far down the jet, when you fitted it did you put the collar level with the bottom of the dashpot. Maybe it wasn't tight and has sliped down.

have a colour tune here so thats grand but the fact i had to turn the adjusting nut so far has me a bit confused!
cold engine woody, pretty sure the needle collar hasnt slipped down but il check n get back to ye. the only thing iv done with the choke is put the cable back on the arm, was grand before so didnt alter it

checked a few times, no air leaks! It started up from cold and ran with choke for a couple of mins so i started winding the mixture nut in a bit and the revs picked up and now ot'l stwrt from cold at say 2 turns leaner but thats still 7 from the top!

just check that when you replaced the needle it was set flush with the bottom of the piston.

took it out again and spotted a small crack on the collar so swapped it with another 1 and refitted all again and brought the adjusting nut back to the top and down 15 flats and it starts! there was a bit of petrol comming out the overflow so i swapped over the needle valve from another carb and thats solved it for now
it idles ok on choke but konks when the choke is in but sounds good to me when its running with throttle, opinions?

had a good look at that today when Dan popped over.
no apparent air leak.
removed and plugged breather hose which was perished.
checked timing with vacuum disconnected - correct @6 degrees btdc
checked fuel mix with colourtune found it to be slightly lean but more importantly would not richen-up under full throttle, causing flat spot.
replaced dashpot oil with 20W/50 - still no richening-up under acceleration - damper, piston, spring, needle, jet all correct.

really looks like a fueling problem - car idles and runs ok apparently, but bogs down under load.

i would try a different dashpot damper first then maybe a different carb.

well i got to mcnamaras this morning and told em whats wrong and they went at the car again and tried an aav needle, it made a difference to the low down lack of power but its now acting strange in 4th! just wont pick up in 4th! the guys at mcnamaras are suggesting a carb rebuild
for some reason im feeling like i need to do a compression test on the engine!

The AAV is just like the AAC needle
I have the AAU with my car and it's great..

Have you got a co% meter?
The colour tune is only good at idle not good when the
Car is under load...

Have you checked your timing?
