newer mini engine,older gearbox

Post by michelle91 »

hi there,jay from wexford.

im in a bit of a jam,ive a little 67 elf,with a poorly engine,smoke and low oil pressure  .

my plan is to take engine and box out, split them and put engine away for future rebuild.

now here is the question, can I put a later mini engine onto my old elf box,its a old rod change box.

I know it will fit on,its more the drop gears, clutch etc id like to know about.

just want to keep the old box as it keeps the same ratios and driveshafts etc.

intrested in all your thoughts, and any offers of engines also.

little 998cc to good for now

thanks jay

First thing is your gearbox is known as a remote gearbox not a rod change which came in in '74.
Any 998 will fit your box but if fitting an A+ engine you must use your current dropgear ,primary gear and bell housing. I would recomend using your own clutch instead of switching to the verto on the A+. You can retain the 1.25 carb but may need a richer needle if you get a higher compression engine. Use the dizzy that comes with the new engine. You will need to make a bracket to fit the dynamo on the A+ block. Just in case it comes up an 1100 or 1275 won't fit your box .

hi there,ok ive a remote gear change, and as you say its best to use my own drop gears etc.

id say most of the engines il be looking at/offered will be a+ engines.

id probably use the carb ant altinator that hopefully come with the doner engine.

thanks for the info.
