Starter motor
Does anyone know if the old type pre engaged starter motor can be directly replaced with the more modern type with the solenoid on it ?

Re: Starter motor
Also different number of teeth on the two starters.
It will fit in fine but will bind on the flywheel when you turn over the engine.

Re: Starter motor
There are 8 teeth on each starter and when turned over the engine does turn over but sounds rough

Re: Starter motor
I have 2 here....pretty sure one has an extra tooth, can't remember which one.
Either way the flywheels have a different number of teeth.

Re: Starter motor
The pre engaged will fit the old flywheel but like you said it makes a lot of noise and will do damage.
The inertia starter will lock the engine if fitted to a later flywheel.
Some early verto flywheels (early metro) have the ring gear for the inertia type starter.
