dash refurb

Looking for tips and advice here folks. Ive removed the wooden dash from the car and once out the bottom portion appeared cracked and easily peeled away. What would be the best course of action here. Should I strip all the veneer off and treat what's underneath? Ive had the idea of putting a leather covering over it, not sure how it would look though?

I have leatheret on my dash with 2 bits of wood flour fome behind it I think it looks good
