Estimate price for seized engine

Post by spud1979 »

Anyone had rough idea of how much it would cost to get a mk1 seized engine up and running to a good spec? Thanks for looking

I want to keep it to its original 848 spec. It's been in a barn since 1991 so not sure what's wrong with it yet

JP,

There was a seized 850 in my Clubby estate and diesel down the bores did the trick after a week or so. Take the head off and see if the bores are scored. I was behind Eamospud's '72 850 all the way to Fermoy and we were above 70mph regularly. It's amazing what twin carbs and a decent exhaust can do for it.

Cheers billy I think I may take this mk1. Crazy not too. One lady owner with 45000 miles. I may start saving. It might see the light of day again. :)

If the car was driving and left lying with the engine intact it may not be fully seized just stuck a little. The most likly thing is the rings are stuck dry in the bores and trying to move them may break them. Remove the head and pore oil into the cylinders and leave for a while ,then gently try to turn the engine by hand. If that works then prime the oil system before trying to start her. Good luck with her.

If you have to go for a full rebuild rings for 850 engines are quite hard to come by so try freeing it out gently first.

You'd probably be better off putting that 850 engine into your red car. It would use less oil.....!!!

Do the rest of us a favour and give it to Dave Collins before the EPA do him for air pollution!

Don't talk to me about that car. Eventful trip Sunday. I think everything has gone at one stage or another in it lol. Could be worse. Into the garage next week for body work and hopefully be ready for the Kildare run on the 30 th. found out that my mk1 that I may be collecting tomorrow was registered the 22/4/64 so I'm setting the date of 22/4/14 for completion of the build. Bring it out for its big birthday
