I was chatting with a few of the lads earlier when the topic of importing a project car (vintage mini) came up.

He said that he wouldnt have to pay the VRT straight away as the car had no engine or gearbox.

I wasnt so sure as tax office always find ways to make you pay!!!

Anyone ever imported a project before that had this issue?

Also, the project car has no wheels so will have to be lifted onto a transporter.

He asked me did I know anyone that delivers project cars from the UK to Ireland.

I didnt know so I reckon you guys might know some person/company that does?

As far as I know this changed a year or so ago. When you bring the car into the country you are supose to declare it and then you have so many days( maybe 30) to bring it to the VRT which is now carried out by the NCT for a road worthyness test.( not a full NCT for classics) . I don't know if they came to a resolution concerning project cars which are obviously not roadworthy. Some classic cars do not have a fixed VRT value and the given value will depend on condition so it would be cheeper to present it before restoring it.

If the car is VRT exempt (you still have to pay the admin charge of €200 ) then condition will not have any impact on the cost.
The car must be in roadworthy condition when re-registered, otherwise they will not register it.
If you bring in a project car now that is more than 30 years old just keep any receipts (ferry, transport company, a piece of paper from the seller with the details on it, etc.) Then when you have restored the car you can produce these to show that the car hasn't been in Ireland for years on an English Reg.
Also don't forget to get the complete V5 from the seller......the Export section is only for use if the UK owner is moving abroad and "exporting" the car with them.

When getting the vrt on my own mini the car was already in the country more than a year. I just told them it was on 3 weeks, gave them a date...no questions were asked! The Car must be mechanically propelled....words they used. I brought the mini on a trailer with no windscreen and panels missing. She didn't care as long as I was able to drive it up the road, so I did!

He emailed the VRT himself and they said to get it roadworthy as soon as possible and keep all documentation possible like ye suggested.

Up to himself now if he wants to do it!

I imported a car that was in the country for six years and not even in my name when I cleared it. They dont care as long as they get the money off you.

Hey, would anyone know if I import a 1963 mini which has been re-shelled, will I be able to register it as classic in Ireland or will it be hassle. The owner has all the relevant 1963 V5 paperwork but he re-shelling brings up the "triggers brush dilemma".....I plan on using it for a Vtec project so it needs to be on classic tax or the project will be unfeasible.

OR maybe I should stay away from anything relating to re-shelling.
