Car Alarm?

Post by CB_Phil »

Since I park her out front of the house I was thinking of getting an alarm fitted (herselfsProjero Jr got nicked from here a little over a year ago). Has anyone got one fitted or recommend a good one @ a decent price?
Any problems w/them? I know w/bikes they can cause trouble w/the electrics over heating & burning out.
Cheers in advance
Phil

an alarm is definitely an advantage, get a big **** off chain and padlock for around the steering wheel as well (and use it!!!)
this does not mean your mini won't be robbed but it a visual deterrent to a would be thief, anything that makes it harder to take will make a thief have second thoughts about nicking it

I have a wheel lock, you know the ones that go thru' the wheel & lock to it?
I want to add to it & curious to what alarms people have fitted or recommend. Also how the Mini's electrics take to having them fitted

no offence, but wheel locks aren't worth a curse, a big thick chain and padlock that goes through the steering wheel and around under and through the seat frame would take a thief longer to get through so they would need more time to do it, time is not something a thief wants to spend in nicking something,
nothing is impossible to nick and if a thief wants it bad enough they will have it but just making it as hard as possible for them can usually deter them

An alarm is a good idea but as macker has said here already if a thief wants something bad enough they will take it.

My poor corolla got robbed two years ago, but to be fair they arent the hardest car to get into as the gardai informed me afterwards.

Long story short I got it back and bought a big chain and two tricircle padlocks.
Padlocked it down by the clutch and up by the steering wheel and wrapped a good bit around the wheel so it was as visible as possible for future potential scumbags to see.

On the flip side of that however, I was told that another person's car close to the area I was living in college's car had tried to be robbed last year only he had taken away two of the HT leads with him into his house. The theives couldnt get it started so they lit a match and burnt it where it was. :(

There is plenty of scum out there, I know a lad who got his car nicked, didnt have a battery, so they nicked one outta his neighbors! Another almost got his bike nicked from his heavily secured garage, luckily they could get it, but to take out their frustration, they killed his sons pet rabbits which were out his back garden!

Got plenty of chains, so will double up w/the wheel lock, but still wouldnt mind an alarm

I was originally going to get an alarm installed, but as I dont drive it enough, the battery would be dead all the time. So what I have done is heandbrake lock thats connected to the gears, a steering lock going against the dashboard and a large chain wound around the steering wheel and padlocked onto a mounting braket (where the seatbelt was just behind the handbrake). If it looks harder to take, they wont bother, unless they really want it.

Does the car not have an immobiliser?
I think the euro cars had them from the mid 90s.

No immobilizer unfortunately. Hidden kill switch would be handy enuf, but would like visual deterrent. Suppose I could rig up a blinking LED to look like an alarm is fitted too

If I plan on the Mini sitting up for anymore then a day or to I just unplug the relay box and take the ht leads of the spark plugs! Just as handy!
Getting old is a must but growing up is optional!

Only problem is, I'm off out to work Saturday (little earlier than planned) for 3-4 months & herself has been nice enuf to offer to keep her on the road for me  Not sure how happy she'd be w/having to do that all the time.
All will have to wait till I'm home now, unless I can persuade the auld lad to do it for me 8)

Yes & no, Most places you only get to see for a few hours, but I've gotten a day or 2 in some cracking spots too.
Who'd your dad work for?
