Welcome to the Irish Mini Owners Club forum. Celebrating 30 years of the Irish Mini Owners Club, 60 years of the Mini, 50 years of the Clubman and 20 years of our flagship event MTM
Was driving home in the Mini earlier on and a girl pulled out in front of me (she was waved out by someone who couldn't see me coming... ). I slammed on the brakes and locked up the wheels but the whole car pulled strongly left, straight towards this girls car. Luckily I let off the brakes and just got past her without colliding. Scary stuff!
So my problem now is that the car pulls left under heavy braking. I put in new seals and stainless pistons last week but the car has always pulled left, my improved braking capabilities have now amplified this problem..
Is this caused by out of balance rear brakes? As far as I know there's no adjustment for the front brakes.
Usually if any car pulls that stronly to either side then the front brakes would be the 1st place to inspect.
Possibly worn pads, oil on one of the discs, a sticking/ or leaking caliper, a kinked brake pipe or hose....loads of things to check, on the same side the car pulled towards.
After that , you would be looking at the steering geometry....ball-joints, suspension & subframe mounts etc. but seeing as you say it only happened under severe braking it would appear to be a brake related issue.
First thing I would check is Trackrod ends and ball joints, then tie rod bushes. If everything in the suspension is tight then its back to the brakes. As you have worked on the brakes already are they bleed properly, if so the next thing I would do is replace the two rubber hoses as they can colaspe on the inside causing a restriction .
Tie rod bushes are new, pads are new, ball joints done recently enough. Bled the system last week in the corrext pattern according to Haynes. Could be the brake pipes, they do look like they've had a tough life.. I'll check them and the suspension/subframe and clean the discs and pads and see how it goes.
My front teardrop subframe bushes are new and I have new polybush tower mounts but I'm not sure how to put them in. I reckon I just take out the tower bolts, jack up the body and try to squeeze them in?
You may have to undo the lower subframe mountings to let you jack the car body high enough to slide in the new tower bushings.
As for the brakes find a nice quiet stretch of Tarmac, build up a bit of speed and lock up the brakes.
Have a pal watching to see if both front wheels lock up around the same time....crude method I know, but at least it will give you a rough idea if the left Brake is not working as effectively as the right.
I wouldn't want to disagree with Woody but if there is a suspension related problem it should show up under cornering as well....i.e. the car will corner better on left-handers or vice versa, or else it will almost fall into a right-hander for example, but have to be pushed much harder into a left-hander.
I'm sure you've done it anyway but no harm to check the Tracking.
