Mpi fuel gauge question

Hi all, I know that mpi fuel gauges can be misleading but can it be that there are still over 15 litres of juice in the tank when the gauge is in reserve? Also, even after filling the tank to the brim the gauge reads three quarter full. Is this the same on all the mpi's or is it just mine?

Its not a major issue, but it can be unnerving at times driving up to 120 miles with the needle past the red line even though you know there is plenty of fuel in the tank!

My 1999 mpi mini is the exact same, must be a common problem, I think to solve the problem you have to replace the fuel sender unit. See link below. Would to fix mine so if you find out how to fix or how much it costs to fix the problem pm me.

Having had one since they were new and now using one as an everyday summer car, yes they all do it. The only safe way is to keep a log of when you fill it. I then try to fill it after 280 miles to be on the safe side. It's similar to the Billings Method and probably just as reliable.

Your all right, it is the sender unit but it isn't faulty, it just isnt pointing to the right part of the tank. The lowest part of the tank is at the rear and what you can do, very easily, is take out the sender and just bend the wire so that the float is pointing in that general direction. Make sure that it's free to travel up and down its full range whilst in the tank and thats it, a very accurate reliable fuel gauge. I've had one for years.

Thanks for the feedback. Next time I get a spare half hour ill have a look at making the adjustment. In the meantime I can relax a little when the gauge is screaming at me to pull into the nearest esso!

I'll have to do something with my gauge also as Sharon ran out of petrol about an hour ago on the N3 An ear bashing is due within the next hour or so
